To demonstrate the value of Enterprise Architecture all along the journey, we will break the cycle down into three phases; embark, expand, and sustain.

‘Embarking’ applies to organizations where an organization does not yet have an Enterprise Architecture function in place, and where the architects are solution architects with IT backgrounds usually deployed into the various domains of the organization and attached to project teams. These organizations operate in silos, each with their own legacy systems and with redundant capabilities. Management usually knows that there is a lack of sufficient visibility and governance to implement changes in the context of digitization, but they don’t know how or don’t see the value of putting in place the cross-domain team that would help break the silos and support the business better.

The ‘expand’ status outlines the approach for strengthening an existing Enterprise Architecture practice by empowering Enterprise Architects with the capabilities that will allow them to build the continuum or enterprise repository of their organization. This phase tackles the issues on data inconsistencies and standardization, systems integration, and fostering collaboration across the organization. Last but not least, it provides clear KPIs on which management can base decisions.

But as some of you may already have experienced, a successful Enterprise Architecture practice regularly needs to continually adapt and re-invent itself as disruption comes with organizational changes such as a new CIO, new priorities from the business, or difficulties in keeping the Enterprise Architecture repository up-to-date. This is the ‘sustain’ phase where Enterprise Architects have to identify and leverage new opportunities to make the practice more robust and with a clearly-defined value proposition.
