The Open Group Healthcare Forum seeks to advance interoperability to exchange key health and healthcare data. We believe secure information should follow the person in a timely manner, wherever he or she goes for care. The key theme of this paper is that person-centered, value-based healthcare depends on interoperability and that interoperability enables the flow of information within and across healthcare systems.
The Forum’s orientation to the interoperability problem in healthcare is holistic and systems-oriented. Business solutions must draw on business, patient-centered, organizational, workflow, technical, and other views rooted in the interdependence of key actors and capabilities, as defined in the Forum’s Healthcare Landscape, presented here. The primary insight captured in the landscape is that in a high performing healthcare system information must flow securely and in a timely manner across boundaries, from and to persons, practitioners, organizations, devices, and so on.
We conclude by discussing the Healthcare Forum’s next steps.
